Waste on the web

Although we hope that you'll find a lot of the information that you need on this website, we couldn't possibly know it all! So here's a list of other websites that you might find useful in your quest to become a rubbish expert.

Websites have been classified to show whether they are most useful for primary age children (1), secondary students (2), teachers (T) and school managers (M), or a combination of these.

General waste information

A site covering all aspects of recycling, with a number of sections including how and where to recycle, recycling facts and myths, and where to buy items made from recycled materials. The 'Fun Stuff' section includes a brilliant animation of what happens inside a compost bin, shows how paper gets recycled and two great games, 'Super Recycler' and 'Keep It Up', as well as lots of information about Recycler the Rapping Robot.

The Fun and Games section (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/fun/?lang=_e) of this site contains games, movies and animations on the themes of waste and the 3 Rs. The site also gives useful background information on a whole range of waste related and other environmental topics.

Describing itself as a 'one-stop recycling information centre', this site has games and information, including a handy guide to the different recycling symbols that can be found on packaging. There is a useful section on school recycling activities, classified according to age and subject. The site also has a 'Recycling Bank Locator' which will locate your nearest recycling banks for a wide range of materials.

A great source of information on every aspect of waste. Downloadable information sheets are available on composting, glass, paper and plastics and a wide range of other topics. Education - related materials include arts & crafts from waste and 'Rubbish Rules' an information and activity sheet for children.

A comprehensive guide to products made from recycled materials. The regularly updated database catalogues more that 930 items made from recycled materials, including stationary and furniture for use in schools.

Cans and Bottles

All you need to know about aluminium recycling, including how your school might be able to make money by recycling cans. Visit sections on recycling at school, and how to integrate this into lessons. You can also download the 'Recycling Loop' teachers' resource, take a recycling can tour and play online games. There is even an additional section specially designed for parents.

The education section of the site offers downloadable information on a range of interesting topics, including Recycling for Africa; introducing children to village life in Burkino Faso, where pupils can help grow trees for food and medicine - just by recycling aluminium cans and foil in the UK.

More cans, this time made of steel. Did you know that steel cans have been used for food packaging since 1810, when Nicholas Appert responded to Napoleon's challenge to invent a method of preserving food for the French army?  There is a kid's zone with interactive quizzes, wordsearches and a video, and a teacher zone, including activity sheets on the history of rubbish, and where our rubbish goes. Scrib can also provide school visits and information packs.

Find out about the history of glass and how and where it is made. There are also glass related games, an art room and a quiz. For teachers there is a free CD to order with KS1 and KS2 activities.

An excellent site all about glass and how it can be recycled. Lots of games and an animation showing how old glass is made into new bottles

Compost, wiggly worms & creepy crawlies

The Learning Zone on this site contains information on making compost and how to build an organic garden in which to use this. There is also a Fun Zone with online quizzes and wordsearches, and a 'How does your garden grow?' competition.

An American site hosted by Squirmin' Herman the worm! This is an attractive site, with links to subjects. The site has a number of activities, including labelling the different parts of worms, and a teacher page containing everything you ever wanted to know about worms but were afraid to ask!

Taking action at school

T, M   Sustainable Schools www.teachernet.gov.uk/sustainableschools/
The Sustainable Schools area of TeacherNet is designed to support schools in becoming more sustainable. It provides useful information for all parts of the school community, including the leadership team, teachers and parents, and offers a number of online and downloadable tools to help schools identify the best route to becoming more sustainable. The teaching resources section includes a search facility where teachers can access lesson plans and materials.

The SUSchool website contains a wide range of information for schools under different headings, including climate change, transport, sustainable playgrounds, recycling and waste. Particularly useful is an interactive version of a poster which shows seventy one ways in which schools can become more sustainable.

A site of environmental teaching resources covering many aspects of waste management, including transport and recycling, as well as topics of water, textiles and timber. The resources include printable worksheets and an online waste management quiz. Covers key stages 1 - 4 but is mainly relevant to key stages 2 and 3.

T, M    Eco Schools - www.eco-schools.org.uk
Information on the Eco Schools programme, which aims to get everyone in the school community involved in making the school environment better. Includes how to register to become an eco school, the award criteria, and general information on becoming eco friendly at school.

T, M    Think Leadership - www.thinkleadership.org.uk
Designed mainly for head teachers and other school leaders, this site can be used to carry out an environmental assessment of your school as well as to obtain information on education for sustainable development and how this links to school policy and the national curriculum.

The wider environment

An introduction to the concept of global footprints, where there is a facility to calculate your own carbon footprint. The children's part of the site includes games, facts, poems, stories, quizzes and web links on the subject of sustainability. For teachers there is background information and numeracy and literacy based classroom activities, and suggestions for activities both in school and at home.

There are three main sections to this site - energy and buildings, energy and the environment, and energy sources. Each section offers an information summary, an activity centre with resources for 8 - 14 year olds, teachers' notes and links to further information.

T    WWF Learning - www.wwflearning.co.uk
The education site of the Worldwide Fund for Nature. There is a strong emphasis on education for sustainable development and advice on how to implement this in your school. You can also use the site to register your school to take part in internet debates for both primary and secondary schools.
